Photo of the Week: Jan 8th

When I was writing the post on Silence for the Pointless Overthinking blog this week, I was reminded of an early morning six months ago when I was sitting on the porch of a cabin on Whidbey Island meditating and heard the sound of a whale exhale in the bay 150 yards or more away. In the calm of the morning quiet, that sound was so exhilarating and intimate. I hustled closer to get a better glimpse of the 3 whales in the bay and took this picture where you can see one tiny little Orca whale fin in the upper middle. But it was the ability to hear them in the quiet that was most gripping.

So I’ve chosen this picture of stillness and calm to post for this week to celebrate all the amazing things we can hear when we are quiet. And also because Seattle has been dark and rainy this week with no great views of much other than rainboots and umbrellas. šŸ™‚

  1. I liked both of your posts. Silence is indeed very lovely! I live alone and so I get to choose how noisy or quiet I wish my place to be. Sometimes Iā€™m quite content to not have the RV or Pandora on while other days I need to have sound as company. When I feel a tinge of loneliness, I focus on the blessings I have around me, and the ability to organize my soundscape is a current privilege. Great post for thinking about!

    1. Thank you for reading both of those and your kind feedback, Tamara. I can relate to the disquiet that comes sometimes when living alone and silence settles in. I love (but am not surprised) that you’ve found a healthy relationship to it! Hope you have a great weekend!

  2. What a great experience to have heard/witnessed the whale, Wynne. Silence is truly a gift and a blessing!

I know when I was younger, I found silences uncomfortable and always tried to fill it with noise. As I get older, I realize silence is a necessity for our wellbeing and for reflection and for ongoing growth.

I also enjoyed your lengthier post on Pointless Overthinking. Way to go for continuing to contribute your reflections to that community too.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

    1. Thank you for your encouragement and support, Ab! Means a lot to me!

I can relate to your experience about noise when I was younger. I always had the radio on in the car and now, especially if I’ve just dropped my kids off at school, I turn it all off!

Hope you enjoy your weekend too!
